A New You – Part 2 “A S.M.A.R.T Start”

This week, during Reveal (our awesome Teen Prayer Meeting), I asked studentsto share their New Year’s Resolutions. I learned something new: teenagers don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. At least, not by that name. They didn’t have to say it. The blank stares, pressed lips, and side-to-side eye motions spoke volumes. So, I rephrased the question:

If there’s one change you’d like to see happen in your life this year, what would it be?

Their responses blessed me. Their vision inspired me. Their honesty humbled me. While they might not have a long list of items dubbed “New Year’s Resolutions”, they were able to articulate at least one area of their lives in which they’d like to see change. Collectively, their goals could be described as S.M.A.R.T: Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Relevant. Time-bound.
Now, all they need to do is start. Just like you. As we discussed last week, you have your goals and God has His plans. Now what? Well, you can start by joining the 13 year old who said he wants to give 100% in everything he does. Whether he knows it or not, some old man wisdom is in this young man’s heart. Consider this aged counsel from Solomon and Paul:

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave,
where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor
wisdom.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31

This year, you have the opportunity to start strong. Because we’re different, our goals won’t be the same. Because we’re unique, God’s plans for us won’t be the same. But, I believe God’s plans do enjoin our 100% participation. The new heart He gives is a
whole heart, and He desires a wholehearted effort. In doing so, we glorify Him.
Know this, God adds His power to your effort. He makes Himself available to strengthen when the stamina runs low, encourage when the vision grows faint, and guide when the light grows dim. So, you’re never contributing to the advancement of your life alone.
God’s hand is always present, supporting, stabilizing, and sustaining. Thus, your 100 % participation is truly a cooperative effort with an all-powerful God. He’ll always give His best. Will you?
